Job Growth Since the Recession

St. Petersburg’s job growth has been slow to recover since the Great Recession. Between 2008 and 2011, St. Petersburg lost nearly 19,000 jobs. Only until recently have the job counts reached pre-recession levels.

It is important to note that most of the jobs lost were among the “Administration and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services” category as illustrated in the graph below. This category includes professions like: Professional Employer Organizations, Temporary Help Services, Telephone Call Centers, and Collection Agencies.

In order to facilitate economic growth, Grow Smarter’s Targeted Job Creation workgroup tracks and identifies growth potential within five key industries with the greatest potential for growth in St. Petersburg: Marine and Life Sciences, Specialized Manufacturing, Financial Services, Data Analytics, and Creative Arts and Design.
